Reasons Negligent Drivers Cause Victims’ Injuries and Deaths in Head-On Crashes

Head-on collisions are some of the most catastrophic accidents that cause victims to suffer long-term injuries or death. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, head-on accidents caused 54 percent of all deaths in 2015-and 7,068 fatalities. These crashes are often more dangerous due to the greater force of impact caused when the two vehicles’ front ends smash into each other abruptly, making it seem like crashing into a brick wall. The dangers increase significantly if the vehicles are driving at a fast speed, such as on a highway.

Common Causes of Head-On Car Accidents

Unfortunately, driver negligence is often the cause of tragic and preventable head-on collisions. Common reasons drivers cause these crashes include:

Driving the wrong way

Many head-on crashes are caused when the negligent driver is driving the wrong way on a road or highway. This can be especially dangerous on highway exit and entrance ramps when the vehicles are traveling at higher speeds.

Crossing the center line

When a driver crosses the center line, which is common on undivided, rural roads, he can crash into an oncoming vehicle.

Passing incorrectly

When a driver tries to pass in a no passing zone or when he does not have sufficient time to do so safely, a head-on collision is the likely result.

Falling asleep

If a driver falls asleep at the wheel-even for a second or two-he can drift into oncoming traffic without even realizing what he has done. Driving when drowsy can also cause the same result.

Speeding

Speeding is always dangerous and can cause a driver to lose control of his vehicle, with a head-on collision being a possible consequence. The risks are even higher if a driver is speeding around a curve.

Intoxicated driving

When a driver is driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, his ability to stay awake, to react to conditions, and to drive safely are greatly diminished. This increases the danger that he will veer into oncoming traffic, fall asleep, speed, or drive the wrong way on a road or highway-all leading to a head-on collision.

Distracted driving

If a driver’s eyes and mind are focused on talking on his cell phone, texting, or eating and drinking, he could drift into oncoming traffic within a few tragic seconds.
