More Than 500,000 Riders Expected at 77th-Annual Event Aug. 3 – 13

More than half a million motorcyclists from around the world are expected at this year’s Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in Sturgis, South Dakota. Unfortunately, motorcycle accidents sometimes occur at this annual event. That’s why it’s important to be prepared if you or a loved one is injured in a motorcycle accident at the 77th-annual rally.

South Dakota motorcycle accident attorney Bill Sims of Northern Plains Justice, LLP, Attorneys at Law knows many of the issues associated with motorcycle accidents at the Sturgis Rally. Here, he answers common questions people often ask attorneys about the rally. This interview follows a recent article about how to avoid a motorcycle accident at the Sturgis Bike Rally.

Why do you think the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally is so popular?

“I think it’s a bit of the allure of the wild west. It’s in a beautiful part of the state. You have a few hundred thousand people that show up. It’s about the bikes and the freedom associated with the event and a nostalgic view of the wild west. They ride the iron horse out there, get together and celebrate, and have a good time.”

What are common reasons motorcycle accident victims contact your law firm from the Sturgis Rally?

“You get a huge concentration of bikes. And believe it or not, people are still not looking for them. The common thing you hear from the at-fault driver is ‘I just didn’t see him.’ The reason we get calls is because you have so many people traveling in from out of state, and they get injured in South Dakota. They return to their homes, and they don’t know where to go for help. Their local attorney in their home state can’t help them with their South Dakota claim. That’s why we’re here.”

What makes motorcycle accidents involving the Sturgis Rally so complicated?

“The forgotten side of motorcycle accident claims is the insurance coordination. You’re coordinating often among states that have differing levels of benefits and require reimbursements if claims are made and recovery is had from an at-fault driver.”

What safety tips would you give to motorcyclists to avoid an accident at the Sturgis Rally?

“Be visible—bright clothing, reflective vests. Wear appropriate clothing-leathers. And while South Dakota does not require a motorcycle helmet to be worn, riders should wear a helmet for their own protection.”

How can a South Dakota lawyer help a Sturgis Rally motorcycle accident victim?

“We are best suited to make a claim against the at-fault driver. We understand the laws that will apply to the case. So even if you’re from another state, there’s a great chance the law that will apply on the liability side of your case is South Dakota law. And you need someone who knows South Dakota law to get that done.”
