Vehicle Technology Can Make Drivers Complacent

New technologies, such as adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist, were first seen as luxuries. Now, many drivers consider them necessities as they navigate the roads and highways of South Dakota.

This technology means drivers have fewer things to worry about—and that’s a problem, according to a AAA study. The Foundation for Traffic Safety found drivers who are comfortable with advanced technologies are more complacent behind the wheel; therefore, they are twice as likely to drive while distracted.

Research Shows How Future Driver Technology Will Affect Road Safety

Virginia Tech researchers, who assisted with the study, said drivers go through stages with new technology. They may not trust the technology at first, taking the time to learn how it works and testing it in practical situations. When they become more experienced with the systems, the tendency is to rely on them too much and to think nothing of engaging in other distracted driving habits.

“This new research suggests that as drivers gain more experience using ADAS technology, they could develop complacency while behind the wheel,” said Dr. David Yang, executive director of the foundation. “Over-reliance on these systems can put drivers and others in dangerous conditions during critical moments.”

AAA: ACE the Complacency test

AAA says the study is a reminder that technology is a tool that is neither good nor bad. While technology offers benefits, drivers are the key to safety. AAA promotes the ACE model for behavior:

  • A: Always “remain active and engaged.”
  • C: Commit to learning how to safely operate driver technology.
  • E: Expect the technology to have limits. It is no substitute for safe driving behavior.

“Remember, technology fails us daily while at work and at home,” said Dr. William Van Tassel, AAA manager of driver training programs. “So, don’t get caught driving distracted when being focused on the road can save your life.”

Don’t Be Complacent After an Accident

If you’ve been injured in a car accident, you are facing many obstacles. You may be injured, out of work, and unable to pay bills or support your family. You will likely discover the legal system is not an easy path to navigate as you seek justice and fair financial compensation. The other driver is not going to admit any fault. They may say their car’s technology failed. They may even blame you. The insurance company, knowing you are desperate for money, will make a tempting financial offer to settle the case that comes nowhere close to paying for your losses.
